Due to the circumstances beyond my control, I am not able to participate in your memorable meeting. I met Andrei when I visited Moscow in 1990. I was very happy to see him because I knew about him from his papers and his reputation in the United States. After graduating from Moscow State University, Andrei pursued his graduate study under the excellent guidance of Academician Keldysh. He was well groomed to conduct his penetrating research programs. He published a number of seminal papers on interaction of light with electrons within dielectric materials, semiconductors, as well as non-linear media. His approach to physics was always to the point while being thoroughly rigorous in mathematics. His works are well known among American physicists. When we met in Moscow in 1990, Andrei explained to me how things work in the Soviet system. He took me to a restaurant and explained to me how the restaurant system works in the Soviet Union. He also told me how airplanes are made in the Soviet Union. While being an excellent scientist, he was capable of telling many interesting stories. In 1991, I invited him to a workshop on squeezed states and uncertainty relations which was held at the University of Maryland. His scientific ability and charming personality left a lasting impression on many American participants. As you know, this workshop, thanks to you and Vladimir, later became developed into the International Conference on Squeezed States and Uncertainty Relations. I met Andrei again when the fourth meeting of this conference series took place in Taiyuan, China. It was 1995. With his deep knowledge of the world and charming personality, Andrei was able to make many Chinese happy. In April of 1997, I heard a sad news from you that Andrei left us at the age of 51. It was particularly sad because I was expecting to see him again in Hungary for the fifth meeting of the squeezed state conference. We all missed him there. It was a great loss to the physics community, because he was so young and had many productive years ahead of him. We will continue missing him. Again I would like to apologize for not being able to be there. I know most of you, and it could have been an excellent opportunity for me to talk about Andrei Vladimirovich Vinogradov. Respectively yours, Young S. Kim _____________________ Professor Young S.Kim University of Maryland
